"I was very pleased with Mr. Meyer’s handing of my arbitration claim. Throughout the process, I felt that I was treated with respect and I always appreciated the extra effort David Meyer and his staff put forth to recover the money my stockbroker had lost. They did a tremendous job and when it was over, David was able to get back a lot more money for me than I ever expected. I have kept the firm’s number handy and would tell anyone that has been a victim of stockbroker misconduct to contact Meyer Wilson." C.F., Ohio
"Thankfully, we hired the law firm of Meyer Wilson - they skillfully guided us through the NASD (now FINRA) arbitration process and achieved an outstanding recovery for us. We do not know what we would have done without their help..."Mr. and Mrs. R.Springfield, Ohio
"Mr. Meyer and his staff was always professional and responsive to my calls and they really took their time with me to review paperwork and make sure that I remained well informed throughout the process. I feel like Mr. Meyer not only helped me to recover my investment losses, but he also helped me to get justice for my late husband..." J.S., Ohio
How to Find a Trustworthy Certified Financial Planner, Broker, or other Financial Advisor
Finding a trustworthy Certified Financial Planner, broker, or other financial advisor can be a worrisome task, particularly in a time when new investment scams seem to come to light daily. Recent surveys have found that approximately 20 percent of U.S. citizens over the age of 65 have already been victims of financial abuse and/or investment fraud. Still, there are many knowledgeable and trustworthy financial professionals out there. The trick is to know how to find one.
First, conduct your own face-to-face interview with any advisor you consider hiring. While many people simply rely on the recommendations of friends, family members, or colleagues, or choose someone they have heard on the radio or seen on TV, doing so is a good way to get conned. If you meet the person face-to-face, however, you are more likely to get a good impression of how that person operates, his/her level of professionalism, and whether he or she will be a good fit for you.
Second, it is advisable to choose a financial professional who has at least three to five years of experience. While less experienced advisors may be less expensive, they are still learning and will likely make mistakes. Unless you have a significantly strong reason for doing so, it is best to stick with someone who already knows the ropes. Choosing someone with more experience also means he or she will have a larger number of references, whose opinions and experiences with the advisor can assist you in your decision.
Most importantly, though, once you have found someone you want to hire, use FINRA's free online tool, BrokerCheck, to check out the advisor before you make your final decision. The tool will confirm the details of the professional's background and let you know of any complaints that have been made against him or her. While you may be certain you have found the best financial professional possible, using BrokerCheck can give you added peace of mind and help protect you against fraud.
