Helping Seniors Avoid Future Investment Scams
Earlier this year, the AARP Foundation released the results of a nationwide study that looked at the important differences among victims of investment fraud and the general population.* The results of the study are important to older Americans (and others) who want to avoid being the victims of investment scams. Results of the AARP Investment Fraud Study
The study found that investment fraud victims were more likely to:
- Expose themselves to two or more sales situations, such as free meals, listening to a sales presentation, or opening junk mail.
- Be interested in persuasion tactics, such as a "promised" return on investment, ways to reduce a mortgage, or buying something at a reduced price for a limited time.
- Fail to take preventive measures, such as putting themselves on the federal Do Not Call List or checking the references of businesses or brokers who want their money.
- Be male, married, have at least some college education, and make at least $50,000 per year.
This information may be used to educate older Americans about the risks of investment scams and how to prevent being a victim of investment fraud, but, unfortunately, education alone will not prevent all future scams.
