Top Five Ohio Investment Scams

Last month, the Ohio Department of Commerce announced the top five investment scams facing Ohio investors. David Goodman, the director of the Ohio Department of Commerce, reminds Ohio investors that there is no such thing as a no risk/high return investment, and that it is important to be knowledgeable and aware of the following potential scams:
  • Ponzi Schemes
  • Unlicensed and Unregistered Sales
  • Affinity Fraud
  • Promissory Notes
  • Distressed Real Estate Schemes

For the fourth consecutive year, Ponzi schemes lead the list of investment scams facing Ohioans. While it can be difficult to recognize a well-organized scam, it is important to make sure that the person selling you an investment is licensed and registered. It is also important to avoid investments that appear to be "too good to be true."
