Investment Fraud Tip: Watch Out for One of Today’s Most Devastating Investment Scams
According to the FBI, Ponzi schemes are one of today's most common - and devastating - investment scams. A quick glance through recent Ohio headlines shows just how ubiquitous the scams have become. In just the past few months alone, we've posted news updates on a number of high-dollar schemes, including:
- The Mason Hill Ponzi scheme;
- The Fair Finance Co. Ponzi scheme;
- A Ponzi scheme perpetrated by the Harris brothers;
- A Forex Ponzi scheme; and
- Paul Joseph Cirigliano's multi-state Ponzi scheme, just to name a few.
Unfortunately, most industry experts agree that investment scams are here to stay. Increased networking opportunities on the Internet mean scam artists - such as affinity fraudsters - have more opportunity to connect with (and scam) more people in their various ethnic, age, religious, and professional groups, regardless of location. Investor vigilance is the key to protection.
Our library contains a host of information for investors, including red flags to watch for and tips on picking a trustworthy adviser. (For four tips Ohio consumers can use to avoid fraud in 2011, click here.)
Additionally, The FBI has these tips for investors:
- Don't trust any investment opportunity that makes exaggerated earnings claims.
- Do your homework (exercise due diligence).
- Consult an unbiased third party - like an unconnected broker or licensed financial advisor - before investing.
